A pilot and his cat are lucky to be alive after they crashed their small plane north of Reno Tuesday morning.

Shortly after takeoff from the Reno Stead Airport, the plane veered to the left then hit the ground.

The pilot and a pet cat were not hurt.

The National Championship Air Races and air show are coming up so many pilots will start practicing on the course.

But we're told the plane, an experimental kit aircraft called a ‘jabberroo' isn't of the racing breed. "This is not a racing plane. This is more of a recreational aircraft. We have 200 based aircraft here; pretty busy airport for the recreational aircraft," says Brian Kuplin of the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority.

The Federal Aviation Administration will now investigate the wreck.
