BLM fights 1 fire, manages others in eastern Nev.

CALIENTE, Nev. (AP) - The federal Bureau of Land Management says several lightning-sparked wildfires aren't posing a threat to residents in eastern Nevada communities in Lincoln County.

BLM fire officer Tye Petersen says Caliente and nearby hamlets might see smoke from the 800-plus acre Sams Fire, about 25 miles southeast of Caliente, and the 120-plus acre Upper Springs Fire, about 20 miles east of Pony Springs.

Petersen says the Upper Springs Fire started Sunday. Aircraft dropped fire retardant around it, and firefighters with heavy equipment were expected to encircle it by Monday.

He says the bureau is managing but allowing the Sams fire and the 15-acre Sawmill Canyon Fire to burn near the Clover Mountains Wilderness.

That's about 100 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
