
The man who hoped to raffle off his home to pay for surgery has been ordered to stop.
Jim Garner wanted to raffle off his historic Virginia City home for just $25 per ticket. Proceeds would have paid for Garner's upcoming back surgery, but the Nevada State Gaming Control Board has since shut him down because this type of raffle is illegal.
"Well, it's a lottery and lotteries are illegal in Nevada with very few exceptions," said Jerry Markling, chief of enforcement division with the Gaming Control Board.
Nevada law only allows non-profit groups to hold raffles.
While people have tried to raffled their homes before, the Nevada Gaming Control Board says it has been years since the last attempt.
We're told the money for tickets sold so far, has been returned.
