In an early floor session Friday morning, the Nevada Assembly voted to override vetoes of several budget bills.

The key override was SB 429, the tax package negotiated between Senate Republicans and Democrats.

The Senate stayed up late Friday night to override the tax bill by 17-4. The assembly voted 29-13 to override, allowing the bill to become law without the Governor's signature.

The tax package includes a temporary 1/3 point increase in sales tax, along with increased vehicle registration fees, and business taxes.

Bundled with a diversion of local taxes, spending cuts, furloughs for state workers, and stimulus money, the tax measure is designed to keep the state from gouging education and other state services.

Thursday evening, Governor Jim Gibbons vetoed 8 budget bills, along with 12 others.

The Republican Governor broke the all-time Nevada record for number of vetoes in one session.

He has vetoed 31 bills so far. The prior record was 30 vetoes in Nevada's first legislative session, in 1864-65.
